Chapter 47: Section 47 - Close and Open Your Eyes, and It's Daybreak
If he could modify this system, he should be able to solve the problem of meaningless screen spam that interfered with his vision.
Honestly, he had become somewhat accustomed to it, and he began to selectively ignore the messages, which weren't as annoying as they had been at first.
After the "cls" command, he threw out a "dir" command.
Emmm...
Where's my update.bat?
"A:>\\directory"
****/12/12--12:21----2333--setup.exe
2333 bytes"
Chen Fei was somewhat stunned. The update.bat in the "A:>\\" partition had vanished, and instead, there was a new setup.exe.
The files here could actually change.
Screw it, I don't care anymore.
"A:>\\setup.exe"
Enter!
Close my eyes, open them, and it's already daylight!
Damn!
Chen Fei didn't even have a chance to lie down and had already woken up.
That meant he had sat on the bed the entire night without feeling anything.
"Chirp chirp chirp!"
Xiao Jiu, who had already woken up, was hopping cheerfully on Chen Fei's shoulder as usual, nibbling at his ear from time to time, and smearing his ear with spots of color from the paddle fruit juice it had stolen before.
Called back to reality by the crisp chirping, Chen Fei carefully moved his body, relieved to feel neither stiffness nor discomfort, and he let out a long breath.
This darn DOS system wasn't so bad after all.
Focusing his gaze, the view in front of his eyes was refreshing, without the annoying "Illegal operation or wrong command" messages. Instead, it seemed to have entered some sort of progress interface, and it appeared to be an online installation.
"Installation progress>>>>>>>>>>>...0.01%..."
Below it showed the number of files being downloaded: 3 (2MB)/17174 (19.5GB), with a current connection speed of 0.05KB, sometimes dropping to 0.01KB.
This godly internet speed... must be prehistoric, right?
It's hopeless, just let it die, I'm tired!
At this rate, it's going to take forever to download.
But Chen Fei didn't care. Whether the installation interface completed 100% wasn't important. What mattered was that the interface was refreshing and not as irritating as the previous DOS command line interface.
So, let it download however long it wants, preferably forever. In a sense, that would be a solution to the "Phantosmia" issue.
"Are you awake?"
A cough sounded from outside the house, and the voice of Old Master Barut from the Neanderthal tribe came in.
"I've been awake for a while, Grandpa Barut, good morning!"
Chen Fei checked his cell phone; it was only 7:05 AM, and there was still some time before he had to start work officially. He didn't expect the other party to come over so early.
"No problem, I'm old and get up early. I brought breakfast for you."
Old Barut entered the room, carrying a thermal bag with the breakfast he had brought for Chen Fei, placing it on the table inside the hut.
The base's breakfast was basically prepared by Chef Singh and Chef Abel, each contributing their part.
Without being polite to Old Barut, Chen Fei hurriedly washed up, put his personal belongings back into the storage cabinet, sat down at the round table, and opened the thermal bag. Inside, there was a box of steamed buns, a box of pan-fried dumplings, a portion of fried noodles, and a jar of steaming rice porridge.
Taking a gentle sniff, if full marks were 100 points, it would at least get 60 points to pass. Industrialized frozen food was just like that; it couldn't satisfy everyone.
However, there are benefits to unpacking as well. Although it's not the same as the authentic hometown flavor, at least it doesn't fall victim to all sorts of maddening modifications and get laced with a bizarre curry taste that could potentially incite a riot throughout the base.
The cost-saving measures at the Aircrew Base, more or less, all had some lines that couldn't be crossed.
"How did you sleep last night?"
Seeing Chen Fei wolf down his breakfast, Barut poured him a cup of coffee, which was just what he needed to perk up and get into work mode sooner.
"Not bad!"
His eyes had closed and then it was daylight, without even a dream. Chen Fei didn't feel anything was amiss; in fact, he was full of energy at the moment, showing no signs of grogginess or stiffness from staying up all night, it felt more like a dreamless night.
"Good to hear you're adapting, the last thing we need is for you to have trouble sleeping here."
Barut said, smiling and nodding.
Some people are sensitive to different sleeping environments, which can lead to sleep problems. If one can adapt, then the upcoming night shifts will be much easier.
Chen Fei quickly packed up his things, bid farewell to Barut, and took the collected trash with him.
He returned to the dormitory to prepare some items and still found the time to call home to check in with each other.
Elder Brother Chen had just gotten married but didn't take a honeymoon with his bride. Instead, he went to work overtime the day after the wedding banquet, and it stretched to three days. He was even planning to start a second job during his free time. The expected grand wedding banquet ended up being a simple formality.
The bride's family and friends were clearly not too pleased, and there were no shortage of cold remarks.
Fortunately, his new sister-in-law was understanding and didn't complain much. Not only did she manage their small household well, but she also often came to help out at her in-laws' home.
Chen Meng finally got serious, discarded all celebrity merchandise, and devoted herself to her studies, aiming for a good university and a good job in the future. She was determined to take on the debt that Second Brother Chen Fei had shouldered and not become a burden on the family.
Father Chen and Mother Chen had retired, but now they had each found a job and could earn a bit to help with the family expenses.
Everyone was working hard because of that huge debt; not a single person was idle.
Given the situation, Chen Fei didn't dare tell his family that he had accidentally killed a Giant Dragon and almost lost his life.
It's better not to worry the family when you're away from home.
-
After lunch, Chen Fei's "Genuine Fragrance" Combat Flight Squadron training class hadn't started yet. Along with all the employees of the Aircrew Base, he received a notification for an online video conference.
As a subsidiary of the Apocalypse Defense Group, the Aircrew Base had an independent internal management system.
Each employee could use their work card number and corresponding password to look up their salary statements, work performance assessments, approvals for personal applications and reports, as well as special announcements from the base.
Following the notification, Chen Fei opened the link, and the screen of his tablet immediately showed the image of Hanna Gagel, the One-Eye, Second-Level Inspector of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. She sat behind the former executive manager's desk, her face cold as she stared at everyone on the screen.
Many people were likely bewildered at this moment since only a few at the Aircrew Base were aware that the executive manager was being replaced, and there hadn't been an official announcement till now.
After a moment of silence, Hanna Gagel finally spoke.
"I am Hanna Gagel from the Apocalypse Defense Group Headquarters, officially replacing Mr. Morris Morgan as the new executive manager of the Aircrew Base. I look forward to working pleasantly with all of you in the days to come."
All over the Aircrew Base, there was an uproar, as many hadn't expected such a sudden change in management without any prior indication.
"WTF?"
Chen Fei heard the incredulous voice of Squadron Leader Chekhov, nicknamed Big Bear.
The deputy squadron leader of "Genuine Fragrance" Combat Flight Squadron, "Devil Pepper" Irinei Rusios took a sniff and spoke with indifference, "This woman, huh, Cyclops!"
"Yeah, she's hot!"
The pilot of the Z-9 Armed Helicopter, nicknamed "Miso," Yamada Yuhu split into a lecherous grin, nearly licking the screen.
The mechanic foreman, Xiao Ming, remained expressionless: "..."
Whether the executive manager changed or not didn't impact him much.
Pilots are easy to find, but experienced mechanics are scarce, so he had the right to be aloof.
While everyone was speculating about the inaugural speech of the new executive manager, Hanna Gagel's next words once again took them by surprise.
"Next, I will show you a video."
Screens of various sizes simultaneously flashed in unison.
