American Tax Officer

Chapter 111: Chapter 96: Do you think the reserve will keep you safe? _3

"I have a room at my place too; you're welcome to come if you don't mind. It's safer for everyone to look out for each other."

"..."

The team members each extended an invitation.

"No need, I'll just stay at the bureau. It's just for one night anyway!"

Seeing David so determined, no one insisted further; they simply told him to contact them if he needed anything and then they all left.

The next morning.

Waking up in his office, David's first call was to a real estate company, to look for a residence close to the Lake District National Tax Bureau.

Then he arrived at the Director's office and knocked on the door.

"Come in!"

Seeing David enter, William greeted him with a friendly expression. However, noticing that David seemed to have not slept well, he quickly asked with concern, "What's wrong, Director David? Are you too tired from work lately? Do you want a couple of days off?"

"No need, something happened yesterday, and I need to report to you about it."

William asked curiously, "Oh? What happened?"

"When I was returning home yesterday..."

David told him about the attack.

After hearing the whole story, William was initially stunned; clearly, he had not expected Dieter to be so bold as to dare to assassinate a tax bureau official.

Then he angrily responded, "Damn it, Dieter doesn't want to live anymore, daring to resort to assassination. Where is he now? Arrest him immediately!"

"He probably caught wind of something and fled quickly back to their Native American reservation!"

David had thought it through; with Dieter's intelligence, having had the audacity to try to assassinate him, there was no way he would run away so cowardly.

There had to be someone behind him guiding him, or a demand made, for him to have escaped back to the reservation so quickly.

"Escaped back to the reservation?"

William frowned, clearly aware of the difficulty in making an arrest on reservation land, then asked, "The assassination attempt on you, is there a complete chain of evidence?"

"The assassin side is almost taken care of, and he will testify. Moreover, one of Dieter's key henchmen has also surrendered. After an audit, whether it's for tax evasion or assassination, there will be a complete chain of evidence!"

Hearing there was a complete chain of evidence, William had no more hesitations and said fiercely, "Good, relay a message to Chief Gael then. He must hand over the man. If he doesn't, we will request the state bureau to deploy armed forces and roll up to their tribe!"

"Director, there's no hurry on this. Dieter is right there on the reservation, he can't fly away. What we need to do now is to start tallying up his assets in the Lake District first, we can't let him deal with them or move them away!"

William thought about it and agreed.

The man was on the reservation and couldn't escape, but it would be troublesome if the other side managed to transfer the assets away.

They wanted to capture the man, but they definitely wanted his taxes too!

Immediately he nodded and said, "Alright, then do as you've planned. Keep me informed of any issues or progress!"

"Understood!"

When he returned to his office, all eight team members had arrived.

Selina was the first to speak up, "Director David, I heard you were attacked yesterday. Are you alright?"

David had not informed her of the previous night's events.

And since the other team members knew that this scion of a prominent family wasn't truly here to be an Inspector, naturally, no one had informed her either.

"I'm fine, thank you for your concern, Selina."

David looked at Nisen and asked, "How about you, any problems on your end?"

Nisen replied, "I've already placed him securely; he's very safe. But last night, I was informed that two individuals of unknown origin went to the hospital to snoop around him. Fortunately, Chief Tax Officer, you moved him just in time; otherwise, there might have been some trouble!" MVLeMpYr-unofficial-text

Hearing this, David felt grateful for his wise decision the previous night and then turned to Bucky to ask, "Any leads on that guy's wife and kid?"

"I've checked their home and other places they could be, but haven't found them. They must be hidden away by some of Dieter's men!"

David's expression darkened, and he replied, "Call the CIA, ask them to do us this favor."

Gathering intelligence was CIA's forte; they could likely discover information faster than his own system.

And since the CIA owed them, they would probably be very 'happy' to help.

"Got it!"

David then looked at Ariel and inquired, "What about those accounts you were checking yesterday? Any results?"

"Checked it, Director, and they are indeed Dieter's accounts. Combined, they hold about 15 million US dollars."

"Have you applied for a freeze?"

"I've applied, and we can now initiate the freezing process!"

David nodded, then pulled a piece of paper from the drawer and handed it to Nisen, saying, "This is a warehouse that Sapir mentioned last night. Take some people and seal it immediately. Control all the goods and cash!"

"Yes, sir."

Nisen immediately left with his team, and soon the room was left with only Selina standing awkwardly, as everyone else had tasks assigned and she didn't, which made her feel slightly out of place.

Noticing her discomfort, David said, "You go to Ariel. Have her teach you how to apply for an account and funds freeze."

"Okay..."

Relieved, Selina turned and left immediately.
